Lovepunk can be described as an identity and a movement. It is an opposition to the societal expectations around the concept of love. Those who are lovepunk reject traditional rules of gender, attraction, orientation and relationships, and actively resist aphobia and the oppression caused by defying societal norms. Those who are aro-spec, ace-spec, aplatonic, loveless, lovequeer, polyamorous, transgender, non-binary, queer, neurodivergent, disabled or BIPOC may feel as though society's standards of love were not made to include them, and may been been used to dehumanize them.[1]
One does not have to be a-spec to be lovepunk. The term can be used by anyone who feels as though they defy societal norms surrounding the concept of love, either through intentional rebellion or not. Those who are loveless or lovequeer may fall under lovepunk, but they do not have to. [1]
History
The term was coined by Tumblr user small-ass-mustelid on July 27, 2021.[1]
Flags & Symbols
The lovepunk flag was coined by Tumblr user where-things-are-hollow at some point before November 9, 2021. There is no known meaning behind the flag.[2]
An alternative lovepunk flag was created by Reddit user That_Enby_Zev on the r/XenogendersAndMore subreddit. They redesigned the flag to match the voidpunk and paradoxpunk flags.[3]
