    LGBTQ+ Identity
    Transfeminine flag

Transfeminine, often abbreviated to Transfem or Transfemme, is a gender modality under the transgender umbrella, and is an umbrella term in of itself.[1] It typically describes someone who identifies with a feminine transgender identity.[2] Transfeminine is usually used towards those who were assigned male at birth, but is not exclusive to those who were AMAB.[3] The term can be used to describe gender expression or as a gender identity on its own.[4]

While this is used as an umbrella, it's important to note that not all trans women or individuals transitioning towards a female appearance identify with femininity.[5]

Transfeminine individuals may take part in voice therapy, which involves training one's voice to help them match their voice with their gender identity. One may also remove their body hair, pad their hips or bust, or do what is called "tucking."[6]

While the term male to female (MtF) is what most think of when they hear of transfemininity, that is not accurate to every transfeminine individual.[6]

    History[edit | edit source]

The exact origin of the term transfeminine is not clear. The first written use found is from a magazine called The TV-TS Tapestry in 1985, in which Jane Nance wrote a piece entitled TRANSFEMININE!!!.[3] She proposed the term "transfeminine" to refer to "a male who feels like a female, strictly undefined in relation to any issue of an operation."[7]

    Flags & Symbols[edit | edit source]

    Alternative transfeminine flag

The most common transfeminine flag was uploaded in 2015, but the original creator is not known. It uses the same shades of pink and blue as the transgender flag, however the flag has no known meaning.[3]

    Black Transfeminine flag

Another transfeminine flag was uploaded onto the Tumblr account Beyond MOGAI Pride Flags on March 24, 2019. The colors and format were chosen from the trans flag, but using purple from a feminist flag instead of blue.[8]

The Black Transfeminine flag was created by X user frogwhomp on April 28, 2022. The brown represents ethnic and racial identity, the blue represents freedom, confidence and peace, the beige represents those who are transitioning, gender neutral or have no gender, and are intersex, the pink represents love, self-love and working towards loving oneself, the redish-orange represents joy, friendliness, and compassion.[9]
